A First Encounter in the High Country

Many people know the road over Guanella Pass. As you drive, the pine forests become sparse, the mountains open up, and the air gets crisper. Visiting the iron fens near Guanella Pass changed how I see alpine landscapes. Not every fragile place looks dramatic at first glance. Some reveal their importance only through understanding. The orange-stained ground tells a story written in minerals and time.

Education is the first step toward protection. The more people recognize iron fens, the less likely they are to damage them. These quiet wetlands deserve attention, not intrusion. Their survival depends on restraint as much as appreciation.
